Ubicom SX 48/52 Embedded Controller Devices

• The latest SXKey software (version 1.20) does support programming and ICE but problems with ports not being written or read in debug, random resets, and entering debug mode with the processor reported as "Running" or "Sleeping" have been noted.with the 52 datecode 9910 (better support promised for 48/52 datecodes AB0004AA or later)
   
• A special SXKey52 adapter and SXKey52 software (v1.07 for 48/52) is available that program the 52 datecode 9910 but does not yet support ICE. Support for programming and ICE in the 48/52 with the standard SXKey rev E is available with the latest versions of the SXKey software (SXKey52 v 1.20).
   
• Advanced Transdata has a $375 "in-system debugger" pn SX-ISD that is an upscale version of the SXKey system. It is recommended by top Ubicom engineers. It fully supports the 48/52 with programming and ICE. If you have problems with it not eraseing the SX chips, make sure that you have upgraded to the most recient version of the SX-ISD software.
   
• http://www.svtehs.com/sxdev.htm can be powered from target board, draws less than 5 mA, 120...150 MHz, down to 3V, use any clock source (quartz, ceramic resonator, oscillator or external clock) and have advanced IDE with many features supported: for example, Timers and Bank0 support for SX48/52, data injection mode, extended watch atributes, external assembler SASM or MPASM, external simulator SXSIM and external C compiler Hitech C (free version).

• Why does Ubicom use the JEDEC MS022 footprint rather than the more common MS026? Because the MS022 is exactly half way between the standard MS026 used in the US and the package foot commonly used by the Japaneese. Splitting the difference allows the part to fit in assembly part handlers for either system. Just watch out when your laying out your SMD pads!
   
• For prototyping, the 52 pin surface mount PQFP package will require one of the following:
   
  • a 52pin PQFP (0.65mm pin spacing 13.2mm x 13.2mm tip to tip) to pcb (pn: 160-8404-02) or wirewrap (pn: 160-8404-07) adapter from http://www.adapters.com for about $65 but watch out! the leads on the chip come down about half off the solder pads on the top of the adapter requireing that you manually push all the pins back against the body before soldering. They do not have an adapter with a socket for prices less than $250 each min qty 5.
    
  • a test socket, pn: 7310-052-X-08 from http://www.wellscti.com distributed by SouthWest Sales 1-602-424-7327 for about $27.70 but the foot print on the socket is not appropriate for prototyping so the unit would have to be soldered to a (custom) adapter board with leads run out to posts on more standard spaceing (The 7010-052-X-08 part is the MS-026 JDEC foot form (1.0mm lead length) and the sx52 is MS-022 (1.60mm lead length)
    
  • a test socket, pn: FTQ-52-0.65-02A from http://www.enplas.com/prod/qfp.htm distributed by High Performance Test, Inc. 1-510-445-1182 or evannspam at TakeThisOuThastsol.com for about $24.36. Andrew Seddon confirms that the chip fits the socket. But, again, the foot print on the socket is not appropriate for prototyping so the unit would have to be soldered to a (custom) adapter board with leads run out to posts on more standard spaceing.

You have to solder on the chip and SMT pins. $2 + ($60) shipping and customs from Latvia.

• There is also a very nice DIP40 adapter for the SX48 available from http://www.gigatechnology.com/othmodprod.html for around $30 + plus shipping from Austrailia.
