Thanks for the explanation! I think the end result is similar to the
purely analog approach I described EXCEPT that with the approach you
describe, the motor is driven with a PWM signal (the pulse width is the
difference between the locally generated pulse width and the input pulse)
instead of a varying DC voltage.
