Bob,

We were having fun until you spoiled it! You're right, signed arithmetic
will certainly have an impact on the efficiency. At the very least, the
sign bit of the data will need to be examined this will add at least three
more cycles per loop iteration:

     BTFSC  PLUSW0,7
      bra   unsigned
signed:
....

....
