I am sure there will be immediate flak from several other
piclisters for "suggesting" this, but try hooking it up using
a 1-2K resistor in series with the lead you believe to be +5v.

If correctly connected, the chip probably will function.
If incorrectly connected, the resistor will help protect its
little plastic behind. If there is a queasy feeling in your
stomach, use a larger value R.
