I've no idea about the hissing and blowing but from what I have recently
gathered a PIC CMOS input with a 1 MEG series resistor and nothing else
should make a terrific electrostatic voltmeter (as in cat fur, rubbed).

One should periodically turn it to output and drive it high or low
depending on which polarity of electrostatics is to be detected at the
moment ;)
