'A/D conversion question'

Hi all,
I am trying to build a mains voltage and frequency monitor (110V 60Hz / 220V
50Hz autoranging) using a PIC 16C72 with an LCD for presentation. I am
managing to finish the frequency meter, but I don't know how to feed the A/D
module (which accepts DC) with AC.
Should I sample the rectified, scaled-down sinewave as many times as I can
and then use the maximum value as "peak" voltage?
Would it be better to use a 10uF electrolytic capacitor to get DC and feed
that to the A/D module?
Please, if anyone has successfully used the A/D module for measuring AC,
tell me how to do it.
Thank you.
