Hi all,
I am really sorry about sending this E_mail to all of you, but I have
failed to unsubscribe this list, no matter how much I tried.
It seems to me that the system does not recognize my efforts in order
to get off the PICLIST, and I am really pissed off with this situation.
Pleeeeeease unsubscribe me or I will keep writing this message till
somebody gets really angry and tell the system administrator to find
some way to help me.

This is my first (I think :-) and last (I hope :-) comment to these
unsubscribe messages.
This mailing list, as many other useful Internet resources, is organized by
SOMEBODY, who does this FOR FREE. Just for the fun of it, or because (s)he
thinks it does good to the world, or for which reason ever. (Here I might
direct a fullhearted "thank you" to whoever is this person here... :-)
Therefore I think the MINIMUM RESPECT one can show for these people who do
so is to -- at least -- READ the INTRODUCTORY MESSAGES which come right
after you subscribe. The piclist was the first mailing list I ever
subscribed to, but I had NO PROBLEM AT ALL to understand the very clear and
concise explanations I received shortly after subscribing on how to
unsubscribe and do other things. (I in fact had once a problem with
unsubscribing which was due to some changes in my email headers, which were
very kindly and immediately resolved by the organizing person.)
The fact that the people who send these unsubscribe messages do this lets
assume that they, like you, are not familiar with mailing list servers (as
they all work more or less similar). In such a case -- not being familiar
with something -- it is good practice anyway (independently of the special
reason I gave above in the case of privately run public mailing lists) to
read the explanatory stuff that comes along with it. In the case of
resources which are not for free this can help you to economize loads of
money -- which is no reason at all not to do so when it's for free.
And I have yet to encounter rudeness here. The only rudeness I found was
directed to people who repeatedly abused a worthful resource for many. And
it wasn't exactly *rude*, considering the occasion (like pages and pages of
"unsubscribe" to thousands of readers -- is *this* rude or is it?).

Only a month then? Wait until you also get sick of people who don't read
their
mail and expect some form of miraculous machine intervention in a human
discussion. The daily 'Which-is-the-best-programmer-under-$1' question
is
still ok, as it helps someone to get started in the PIC realm, but plain
ignorance has no excuse.
This guy has to RTFM.

With all due respect for my fellow man, I can certainly understand why
some of the Piclisters get annoyed with the blatant laziness of the few
who don't bother to take note of the content of the piclist confirmation
email that explains all about the list and also recommends NOT to delete
the msg so you can unsubscribe later.
With regard to these few, I think that if one want's to be treated with
respect and dignity, one should also exercise intelligence instead of
ignorance (read laziness).
This is not intended as a flame.

Maybe EVERYBODY on the list should mail him the message he recieved from
the listserver... you know the one you should NOT delete?
That should teach him all he needs to know about listservers....
Please don't do this to me though... it would ruin my day and I still

Which is fine to say, but omits to mention one very special and
ENTIRELY conter-intuitive thing ... that the "command" is to go in the
message BODY rather than the title where you would expect. The title
can be blank (but the mailer jibes you on this).

Hello Jack.
> I'm just repeating what I received in my welcoming message. Yours
> probably has the same message...
Oh yes, and THAT message is what I am complaining about. A good piece
of jargon it is too, because it uses the word "COMMAND" without
explaining how to make the command; that is, in exactly which part of
the mailing to PUT it.
Some mailer systems (other than the Internet) or servers read commands
from the subject line and parameters from the body. It is apparent from
some (many?) of these "unsubscribe" messages that the writer has
expected this to be the case for the LISTSERV system and when it does
not respond, they not entirely unreasonably start assuming LISTSERV
doesn't work and mail PICLIST instead.
Which could have been avoided if the instruction had read:
"...You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF PICLIST"
command in the BODY of a message to spamBeGoneLISTSERVEraseME
MITVMA.MIT.EDU. No TITLE
is required "
Simple, eh? Of course if you are the one who wrote/ operates the
listserver, it is so obvious that you take it for granted.
Cheers,
Paul B.

Yes, but what it does NOT explain is what is meant by a "command".
The BIG secret is that the "command" is something placed int the BODY of
the message rather than as intuition would suggest, the subject line,
which (contrary to the preferences of the mailer) is just as well left
blank.
This must be the single greatest source of confusion when un-
subscribing. How do we get someone to FIX the obfuscating text in the
list server?

Rich I now understand why you see all these signoff on this list. I've
tried to unsubscribe about a half dozen times now using every method from
the instructions I've received. None has worked so far. I have several
pages of instructions from the list server and none work. My local server
hasn't been any help either. I can understand Thomas's attempt to try to
unsubscribe using "spam_OUTpicklistSTOPspam
mitvma.mit.edu". That's the only thing I
haven't tried yet. Hell I'd fax or phone the list keeper if I could just
get off this list..... ==Mac==

I had trouble when I went on vacation. It seems that our mail server took
my address KILLspamnamespam
spam_OUTxyzcorp.com and converted it to nameRemoveME
mail.xyzcorp.com which
the list server did not recognize. Turns out, this was caused by a software
upgrade! Check with your postmaster or try spoofing your address.

Wow, I thought I was the only one having problems getting off this list! I too
have tried several times to get off the list but it hasn't had much effect. I
still get all those email's. But now I get them twice, one to each of my email
addresses.
HELP!!!!!

No Problem. I can't wait for your next 'unsubscribe' mail.Maybe you will mail it to the right
address some day, too.
I tell you what - why don't you try the listserver address?
Yes, yes, what a brilliant concept!
THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT EMAIL ADDRESSES
1) PICLIST = this list
2) LISTSERV = the address to send command to
Get it ? ----- *TWO* addresses! (one, two)
If you can't grasp this, you should ask someone that has more than two
neurons knocking together in the IQ department to help you.
To recap (again, and again, and again ad nauseum) :
Point 1 :
You may leave the list at any time by writing "SIGNOFF PICLIST" in the body
of at message to EraseMELISTSERV@spam@
@spam@MITVMA.MIT.EDU (or @spam@LISTSERVspam
KILLspamMITVMA.BITNET).
Point 2 :
The list server doesn't give a shit if you write 'unsubscribe' ten gazillion times in any
number of messages to the list (spamBeGonePICLISTRemoveME
EraseMEMITVA.MIT.EDU). This is for the Piclist
traffic.
Point 3 :
If you have your email address changed, and try to send commands to the server,
you will have to fool it into thinking that it was sent from you old address. Even
better, unsubscribe BEFORE changing you email address.
Point 4 :
You may think your email looks snazzy with all the HTML turds in it, but to
the rest of the world, it is a pain in the ass. Not only is it only unsupported by
half the damn email readers, it is TOTALLY INCOMPREHENSIBLE to the
list server. You can send unsubscribe command in any fucking font and size
you like, you ain't going nowhere, baby. Think.
Point 5 :
Using automated "I am out of the office for the weekend" may dazzle your
colleges with your impressive command of Microsoft products, but it
irritates and infuriates the other 99.9% when all mail from the PIClist is
returned with this incredibly informative and exciting message. No-one
cares if you are away for the weekend.
If I sound a bit sarcastic, I apologise - I was trying to sound caustic.

Folks: I've started zapping off a canned "Here's how to unsubscribe"
sheet to these folks, you can ignore 'em if you want to <G> (On
re-reading it, maybe I should "this might get you off" and "very slow"
to WON'T and WON'T?) Need a PIC tool to do this <G> Maybe that'll be
rev. 2 on the Keydler or something.

HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE
There is one way that works to get off the list. DO NOT post to the
list. This might get you off, but is the worst way to do it; A post to
the list goes to all subscribers, is VERY slow and gets everyone angry
with you. If the administrator misses seeing it (and he DOES NOT read
the list!), you don't get off the list.
Do NOT post to me requesting an unsubscribe. I CANNOT unsubscribe
you. I will simply delete your request. YOU and only you can
unsubscribe yourself.
Post to:
spamBeGoneLISTSERVspamBeGone
@spam@MITVMA.MIT.EDU (i.e. RemoveMELISTSERVRemoveME
RemoveMEMITVMA.MIT.EDU)
from the address at which you are subscribed containing nothing but
unsubscribe PICList
in the first line of the message, from the address at which you are
subscribed. This is automatically executed and is the fastest method.
The message must contain the exact words "unsubscribe PICList", no
other spelling works.
If you are trying to unsubscribe from an address different from the
one you subscribed from, you must include that original address like
this: on the first line of the message:
unsubscribe PICList <oldaddress>
Good luck!

Just a thought. Other lists that I am subscribed to append the
unsubscribe instructions to each and every message, 2 lines at most.

I think you may have failed to mention that sending HTML to the

I just received a bounced E-mail message telling me that the confirmation
string for unsubscribing me from the PicList was expired within 3 days after I
made the initial request. I didn't GET that confirmation until well past
that 3 day limit.
Please remove me from the PicList. Consider this E-mail my confirmation
that I wish to be removed at this time.
Thank you,
Randy Abernathy
