'picstart plus, is there any point'

Hi folks,

Serious question. Is there any point in having a picstart plus if you don't
have MPLAB compatibility?

What if the picstart plus worked with *everything* BUT mplab. That is, MAC,
DOS, linux, windows etc? Would that be a reasonable product?

Of course other 3rd parties with there own IDE and simulators etc could
interface to the picstart plus (and to numerous other programmers as well,
pp1, warp-3, warp17 plus, picstart 16b picstart 16C and others on a short
list) all with the same protocol.

Does this interest anyone apart from myself?

It would be an interesting technical challenge sure, but interesting
technical challenges on their own often end in empty pockets and an empty
stomach!

Thoughts anyone?

I'm not quite sure if I understand your question. Are you saying that a
Picstart plus is only usable with MPLAB?

Or are you trying to see if anyone would buy a picstart plus like thing
that didn't work with mplab?

Thanks,
dg

Yes, the PICSTART PLUS is useful _exclusively_ with MPLAB and windows.

I was trying to gauge how many, if any, would forgo MPLAB to be able to use
the picstart plus on other platforms. In short, change the firmware chip
over to a 3rd party protocol the potentially offers all the above. Of
course restoring MPLAB compatibility would simple mean changing the chip
back to the orginal microchip supplied firmware.
