I have made a PI controller using a 16C62.  I based my A/D converter on the
microchip application note AN512.  The algortihm is very simple, although
mine was implemented in C which speeded things up no end (development that
is, not execution speed).  The main problem is that to get good resolution
and accuracy you will need to use 16 bit variables, maybe more, which
complicates things if you are going to use assembler.  Unfortunately I don't
think I'm allowed to distribute my code (I don't expect you'd want it
either!) but I can give you a few pointers.  I have a very good application
note from motorola on a PID controller using the 68HC11.  I could mail it to
you if you want (pdf document).  Somewhere I have a bunch of information I
collected before I started my project, unfortunately my document filing
system is not all it could be  (big mounds of papers on my desk!)  When I
managed to dig it out I'll post some links.

Microchip has an application note AN532 for a dc motor servo control system
written purely in assembler.  This utilises a PID control algorithm.

If you use altavista you can find masses of information on PID control.
