Hello,

Does anyone know of a graphics conversion program that will convert autocad
dxfs to gif/jpg?  I would like to add some drawings to the web site I am
creating.

Brian

Hello,
Check on the net for a shareware program called PAINTSHOP PRO.  It will
convert just about anything to just about anything.

I don't know about autocad's files convertion (I'm using OrCad), but put my
2 cents:

_NEVER_ use JPEG picture format at schematics drawings!!!!

JPEG used only for photos and orter color and half-tone pictures.
If you use jpeg for black&white drawing you receive very big file with very
bad quality!
The better way is to use PCX, or BMP compressed with ZIP/ARJ. TIFF is not
good choise becouse this format have a big size and badly compressed by
zip.

GIF, or preferably PNG is probably the best compressed image format
for schematics and PCB layouts.  Both do a good job of compressing two
tone images such as these.  RLE is another good choice for images with
only B&W.

Alternately, as Alex points out, a BMP of TIFF of a two tone image
will compress very well with ZIP or something like it (but of course
it must then be unzipped to view it).

If the drawings are screen sized then why not use the print screen
key and paste the image into a drawing package and convert it to gif
format. I have a small windows program that can do the conversion if
you like. (48K compressed).

Correct

Wrong - use GIF

The net would be a much quicker place if EVERYONE knew the simple
rules :
Photos - use JPEG and get the compression factor right.
Drawings/graphics/line art - use GIF and ensure you only use the
colour depth you need.

Sving JPEGs with optimised pallete gives smaller image sizes.

Or even get "PDFWriter" from Adobe. The program pretends to be a
printer, you simply "print" to it and it prompts you for a filename
and location. It then generates a PDF file that can be viewed using
"Acrobat Reader" or an Acrobat enabled web browser. If it is done
right you generate a vector PDF rather than a bitmap PDF, this
means the printer output is virtualy resolution independant. You can
tweak the compression settings for optimum results

If you use "Acrobat Exchange" (or full blown Acrobat) you can combine
documentation, schematics and circuit board foils into a single PDF
with links, bookmarks and thumbnails. The PDF's should also be
importable into a page layout program (Pagemaker/ Quark Xpress) if
you need to publish in print.
