'graphical lcd project'

Hello, I have a question about the ability of what can be done with a
pic.  I want to take a 3.5  color graphical lcd display, combine it with
a 4mb flash memory chip, a 4 button keypad, a serial adapter and a
microprocessor, to make it possible to display jpeg images.  The same as
you do with the small screen displays on the back of digital cameras and
camcorders.  I want to be able to download pictures from my pc to a very
small carryable display.
Can anyone tell me if this can be done, or if I m missing anything.  I
want it to be small and cheap, but I know very little about small
electronics, or programming.
Any comments are welcome.
If it could also be made to play small mpeg video clips, or any format
video clips for that matter, that would be very impressive.
Thanks
Charlie

Anything is possible, the devil is in the details.

I will start on the assumption that the LCD has it's own drivers and
controllers, so the uP or uC you use can just send setpixel commands to
display things.

If this is the case, the only other detail you may have difficulty with
is the jpeg decoding.  It is not impossible, but a PIC would have to
take some time to decode a jpeg.

So it is possible, given the restraints above.  I would probably not go
with a pic on it though, choosing instead a 16 or 32 bit processor, or
even a DSP.

Sony already has such a product. I believe they called it 'Picture
Frame'.
It sits on your table and automatically cycles through a number of
photos. Saw it in a CNN news clip about spring Comdex.

And it would take an impressive amount of memory to do that. A 4 Mb
flash card won't cut it (well, maybe a seconds worth).
Maybe you should use IBM's new micro HD. Smaller than a postage stamp,
several gigs IMS.

Good luck with making this affordable.
