Hi,

My friend has managed to break his floppy drive in his Olivetti notebook.
I cannot find any UK dealers in Olivetti spares.

Can anyone suggest what else I can use ?, e.g, an external drive ?
A drive that connects to the printer port ?
   Etc...

Thanks,
Darren

Hi, Darren;  Many different companies make parallel port floppy drives
(Pacific Rim and Microsolutions {aka Backpack}, for two.)

If you cannot find any, I'll see what I can see, they're quite often $70
USD or so, but sometimes I can find one for less - and, of course,
they're not bootable devices, unfortunately.  One local place has these
fairly often, I was planning to go there tomorrow anyways so I'll go
look.

Another possibility: one of those LS120 External Floppy drives, those
read regular floppies as well IIRC.

And, of course, if you can tell us what make & model the floppy drive
IS, some surplus place may have the same part (but not labeled as an
Olivetti Spare, per se), in stock.

If all you have is a floppy drive connected to your parallel port, how do
you install the drivers for it?

Install drivers off your hard drive (Modem or network card the data to
the hard drive, usually.)  Sometimes you have to know exactly HOW to do
this, but usually you can install everything off the HDD.  (Just don't
get your HDD to a non-bootable state!)

For example, I usually install Dos/Windows out of a directory on the HDD
(c:\Dos622.In\Disk1\, Disk2\, etc.; c:\WFW311.In\, c:\Win95.In\, etc.)
I throw device drivers into c:\Dev\scm\Swapbox\ (for SCM Swapbox docks),
etc., so I can FIND things <G>  So, c:\Dev\Pacific\ would be where to
start looking for a driver for my Pacific Parallel Port Floppy Drive.
And so on.

It REALLY simplifies things on laptops without CD-Rom drives, and speeds
installs greatly (just change a URL to point to the right disk
subdirectory, and you're installing lost faster than off floppy.)

Well, my notebook has an exchangeable floppy which has two connectors on it.
One is used when plugged inside the notebook, the other (DB25 female) to be
connected to the parallel port. When connected to the parallel port, it can
boot from floppy as well. This means that the chipset in the notebook supports
connecting floppy to the parallel port. In fact, during my research for my
other project, I've found that many chipsets (especially for notebooks) have
this feature since (at least) '95. I don't know how old is your notebook but
check your floppy and notebook documentation. If you have such floppy at hand
maybe you can connect it and see if it works. I don't think it should cause
any damage to the notebook.
