I'm looking for a disassembler especially written for the 16c84. It
would be nice if it's a freeware one. (I intend to use it only a few
times).

With greetings ... Jack Raats

Hi Jack

MPLAB (current version 3.31) includes a disassembler.
... AND - It's free!

Method:
In MPLAB read the chip or load the HEX code  >File>Import>Download to Memory.
Open the Program Memory Window >Window>Program Memory
Click on the [-] in the left corner of this window - it gives you the option of
"Hex Code Display", "Machine Code Display", "Disassembly Display".

Have fun!

Christof

Use "download to memory" in the "file" menu in MPLAB.Select the "program memory" in the "windows"
menu".

UMPS Demo will do the job for you:
       - load 16C84 CPU
       - open CPU Code Window,
       - Load your HEX file (menu load), be sure to select the appropriate
format, here HEX16,
       - choose "File - Save as",
       - at "Format" list box, choose "LST File" format or "TEXT file" format,
       - enter the file name to save,
       - press OK and you got it !

UMPS Demo at the following site:

MPLAB and some PIC programmer software have built-in disassemblers.
If you are trying to reverse engineer 16C84 code these are useful but
are not perfect.  A disassembler for the hacker should include a way
of updating the disassembled listing as more information about what
the program does is gained.  An interesting example of such a thing is
Markus Kuhn's PICDIS.  The C source and PC executable can ge grabbed
from:

ftp://ftp.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/pub/multimedia/tv-crypt/microcontroller/pic
dis12.zip

Just in case the long URL is mangled by your mail reader: Grab
/pub/multimedia/tv-crypt/microcontroller/picdis12.zip from
ftp.informatik.uni-erlangen.de by ftp.  It's been a while since I
looked at this but I think it needs INHX16 hex files if yours is in
INHX8M format use swaphex from:

http://www.man.ac.uk/~mbhstdj/files/pichex01.zip

I send this mail to everybody because I am completely new subscriber to
this list.
I have just purchased PIC START PLUS package from Microchip.
I hoped that I will be able to start my first projects in few hours,
but foud that my electronic experience was not enough.
Until now I have build many machines controlled by simple CMOS logic.
I hoped Microchip will include few step by step projects with included
16c84
for absolute beginners in microcontroller field, but I did not find it.

Please guide me a little bit in my first days.

By the way I am 32 Y.O. , live in a country by choice. I am the producer of
beeswax candles.

UMPS can assemble and disassemble all simulated micro. Load the CPL library,
then load your HEX16 code. Click
        * View - CPU Code
        * File - Saves as
Select TXT or LST file (depending what you want to do)
        * enter a file name
        * click OK and enter address range to disassemble.

If you need to include label list, you can create your own, then load
it using File - Load symbol menu.

UMPS at:

       Philippe.
