I've written some programs for the good ol' PIC16c84.  The only trouble
is here in Canada I'm having trouble sourcing any more.  I take it they
have been replaced by the 16f84.  I've tried to recompile the programs
using mpasm for the 16f84, only I end up with dozens of error messages.
Is there anything else I need to change besides the include line?  Any
info would be much appreciated.

                                       Thanx in advance,

                                               Synergetix

You have 32 bytes more ram, and you have to invert one of the programming
lock bits (?) it's been a while.
I did a project last year, started on the C84 and finished on the F84, and
the changes were just that trivial.

Maybe you changed MPASM versions, too? What are the error messages?

You can lie to mpasm and your programmer about it being a 16F84. Tell them
it's a 16C84 and see what happens. I did that when I did not have new
software for my programmer, never had any problems.

There was a point when the default for case-sensitivity was changed between
MPASM versions, and there may be other changes that happen between
versions, that is why I ask about whether you changed MPASM.

Thanx, I really didn't expect such a rapid response.  I did just pic ;-)
up the latest version of mpasm.  I'll try out the suggestions...

work thru the errors one by one:
old 16c84 had diferent names in the include file and documentation for
indf, indr, rtcc etc,  line up new and old file register map and update
your code. also the config register is different and there is more ram,
still based at same starting address though !

Graham Daniel.

redundant, USE STRATIFIED HEAT EXCHANGERS ! and external combustion.

Do you have the 16F84 include file in the same directory? If this is missing
expect lots of errors.

None of these will cause error messages though...

Only changes so far are :
 Inverted Power-up timer bit
Code Protect bit from bit 8 to bit 13 (C84 : 8 only)
 68 bytest of File-registers (C84 : 36)
and, ofcourse, the F84 is _flash_ (what's in a name :-)

Try compiling the program for the C84 .  If you are getting the same
messages/errors as for the F84 it would mean that something else has
changed.  The compiler maybe ?  The default's perhaps ?

16c84 versus 16f84

It is the power-up timer enable bit which is inverted, and there are a
few more protection bits.

Agreed
