Lorick:

The picstart plus can program the 16F87X series, only be sure that the unit
of picstart plus you buy is with firmware version 2.00 or later. If not,
always you can download from the Microchip site the last version of
firmware, and update it with a PIC17C44.

S.-

Asunto: What programmer can program 16F87x?

I am interested in using a pic 16F87x device but I can't seem to find ANY
details anywhere about whether the picstart plus can program it or not.  All
I know for sure is that the special in circuit debugger/programmer mentioned
at microchip.com  can program these things, but it seems it can ONLY program
flash devices and I don't want to really invest in that right now.

I'd like to buy a picstart plus rather than a 3rd party programmer, and I
need to get going asap so I was hoping someone could tell me if it can or
can't program 16F87x devices because if it can't, I'll just use EPROM
devices.  I need a chip with 2 A/D channels and I'd prefer to have them on
the chip rather than use the 16F8x with external A/D chips for instance.
The less discreet components I have, the better.

Yes, luckily I downloaded the MPLAB file from microchip and installed it and
the release notes said firmware 2.00 or later will do the job, and there is
a 2.01 or something on the site so I'll be able to burn my own copy of it if
the unit I buy doesn't have the latest in it.
I'll be ordering a picstart plus and some chips from Digikey in 2 days now
that I finally know what I need.  Now I just have to learn to program in the
instruction set.  Never worked with a pic but I have tonnes of bookmarked
resources and samples downloaded.  I just finished spending 2 days going
through the 80 sites of one of the PIC webrings.  I'm exhausted but I can
now build a robot and a temperature logger!

Yes, the PICSTART Plus can program the 16F87x devices.  The PICSTART Plus is
designed to support all PICmicros that are packaged in standard DIP pinouts.
Firmware will change as programming algorithms for new chips require, but the
basic mission of PS+ is to support all DIP PICmicros.

Hi Lorick.

Telesystem PicProg can do that.

I'm testing it now and still satisfied with it.
Alot of chips of different manufacturers can be
done with PicProg. Last firmware is vers 3.4

For further information visit their page at:

They mentioned that they have reseller(s) in
us/canada.

WBR Dmitry.

PS. They produce couple of good this despite of
many people here called them spammers ;-)

The Carmacon upgrade for the Parallax/Tech Tools programmer does it just
fine.  They just added a checksum function which automatically inserts the
correct data to force the memory checksum to 0, useful for those products
which use memory checksum to ensure valid ROM at startup.  I can provide
C/assembly source for anybody who needs it which calculates the checksum in
the F87x parts.

Hi,
I do it with B. Dobaj's programmer; he's the author of P16PRO. It does the
job excellent. The whole stuff is below $50, and far cheaper, if you
personally solder it.

Imre

Yes, I've recently used PICSTART with a 16F877 with no problem, using
2.01 firmware.
The IDE is much better though. I find really is much easier to develop a
project when you can debug/re-program cycle your prototype on-board.
