It may be an address confirmation scan. If it doesn't bounce it shows that
the address is valid. Mailwasher and similar programs foil these by sending
back a bounce message.

Some also contain a reference to a one pixel picture on a web site. When the
email is read that page is accessed. If the page is unique to the message it
provides a relatively unseen read confirmation. If you read mail offline and
the browser wants to go online at selected messages this can be because they
wish to download web content. If there is no visible web content this may be
a one pixel probe. A look at the html code will reveal.
