Does anyone know what DNP connectors/components are? We have been trying to hammer out a design following the one stated on Rick Farmer's page at http://www.execpc.com/~rfarmer but are a bit unclear as to exactly how he has touted the TxRx to the PIC16F873 Thanks for help ---------------------- Dan University of Exeter

Dan, Well...I looked at two schematics of the EVB at his site. On one schematic, he has "R4 DNP," but on the other schematic, it isn't even there! Also, in the BOM (Bill of Materials), R4 doesn't exist, only R1 and R2. DNP implies that a particular part is a "Do Not Populate". This allows a component to be placed on the schematic, and into the layout. But does not show up on the bill of material. Jim Amos {Original Message removed}

Sometimes you design a PCB that has references to future features or implementations, but you don't want those parts to be purchased or even listed at your unit "basic" model, so you use the DNP to those parts. In some working normal VCR's you can see several missing components on the board, even that the board has all the silkscreen and PCB connections for those components, so you ask; "What in the heck they waste PCB realestate if they don't use it?", but of course, that part of the PCB is used for a different VCR configuration, country, etc. The same VCR board is used in several different VCR models, and in some models there are some features, so that empty part of the PCB is populated. In this diagrams, those components doesn't carry the DNP title.
