'Wanted: serial programmer software for Linux'

Hello Everyone,

I'm looking for a Linux program that supports serial programmer hardware. I've
had success with picprog but unfortunately it does not support 16F876A Pics,
at the moment anyway.

I've tried to run the Windows icprog application under wine and although the
application itself runs I cannot get access to the serial ports under wine.
ICprog and my hardware are compatible and will work together under the
Microsoft OS.

Odyssey apparently works well but it only works with parallel port
programmers. A parallel port programmer is not really an option for me
because on the need for a short lead from the parallel port.

Does anyone know of a suitable serial programmer application or how I might
run icprog under wine?

On getting ICPROG to work properly under WINE, first make sure that your
serial devices are accessible under linux (make sure the /dev/ttyS*
links are valid), and change the options in ICPROG for serial access
from "Direct Access" to "Windows API."

Hope that helps,

Hi,

it is not clear what do you mean, as nowadays almost all programmers are
serial one including those driven via paralel port. However, if you mean
the appropriate port of PC, ie. serial port then I may suggest you the
excellent WISP programmer from Wouter van Ooijen, http://www.voti.nl. Been there,
done that, works fine under Linux, too. Another way is PICP if you have a
PS+ laying around...

Regards,
Imre

Note that Imre actually refers to Wisp628 (16F628 based), not WISP (an
older, 16x84 based design).

As stated by customers: runs fine on windows, Linux, some other Unixes,
OS/2, OS/X (mac), and a few other platforms I forgot about. I have
rewritten the older DOS-based software to support a few more PICS
(mainly 8-pin and 14-pin), so those chips canb be programmed from for
instance a 8088/DOS-based handheld (the customer uses an HP
OminSomething).

 Hi,

Phil probably means the JDM style circuit, he probably has it already
built: http://www.jdm.homepage.dk/newpic.htm .  I thought I got the
16f876a right with picprog-1.4 http://www.iki.fi/hyvatti/pic/picprog.html
but no such luck.  16f88 started to work, at least someone reported.  I
have a samples order on the way for 16f876a so that I can debug this
myself.  Just a stupid mistake I guess.
