'Universal production programmer?'

Hi folks

I am looking for a production programmer.
But i dont want to buy one just for PIC's, as i might need other
processors, FPGA«s etc.  And price tag max $1500 USD.  Preferrably freely
upgradable via Internet.

I only do prototypes and short runs, so speed or gang programming is not
the issue, but versatility and high reliability is.

I find it very strange that all universal programmers i have seen can
program almost everything available, some devices for both 5V and lower
voltages, but they only verify at one nominal voltage??  Probably i am
blind?  Can somebody please tell me where to find what i am looking for?

Thanks in advance
/Morgan

I use the Needham emp-20 here at work. It's easy to use and verifys
at low and high voltages.  It goes for around $500.

Hello Morgan,

the German Sprint 48 plus system does verify at several voltage levels, and
can program lots and lots of different ICs. But for some models like PLCC
or QFP or so the necessary adaptors cost a lot.
The name of the manufacturer is SMS (There are several companies of that
name in Germany, probably look via the internet). Unfortunately I am no
longer at the company where I used this device.

Greetings,

I use a BP-1200 at work, and it's pretty good at programming
most things but the software's sometimes annoying...

[1] If the buffer 'default fill value' is set to $FF, then the
device will fail when programming PICs since the highest
possible value for a PIC memory word is $3FFF; ergo, the
default-fill value must be set to $00.

[2] If a .hex file doesn't have a config word in the right spot,
the default (because the default memory content is $00) is
to slag the part (i.e. LP crystal, code-protected, etc.)  On
   older versions of the BP software, the key location is $1007;
   on newer ones it's $2007.

[3] On many non-PIC parts, the software makes no attempt to opti-
mize for blank memory locations (even when the 'default fill'
value is $FF).  It's annoying waiting years for a 99.9% blank
   part to be programmed.

The BP hardware is good, and the software 'works'.  Hopefully some-
day they'll make it nicer (e.g. squawk if any word value appears in
the .HEX file that's over $3FFF but less than $FFFF, use $2007 for
fuses unless it's blank, in which case use $1007; if that's blank as
well show a warning and leave the fuses as-is.)  Maybe in rev 99.993
they'll manage something like that...
