Hi!

I just come back from the USA (west) and enjoyed your country. BUT I
searched form electronic stuff and didn't found more than 2!! And they
didn't know PICs! It's a shame.... What about Radio Shack... where ther
is no good stuff.

i plan to return to the USA in october, but on the other coast. Is
there anybody that lives there and can help me by telling places where I
can found a lot of things (also surplus stores)?

Is there anybody that live in California, Utha, Nevada or Arizona and
that is reading this mail? Thanks for any answer, I had like some
information. Thanks a lot.

I live in New Jersey, about 2 hours due west of New York City.  Contact
private for more.  What brings you here in October.

Radio Shack is a waste of time.  I get proto stuff there and that's it.
15-20 years ago RS had lots of stuff, and they seem to be getting more ICs
back, but mostly they are a consumer-oriented store, not a hobbyist place.
Too bad they bought up Lafayette.

Try mail order houses--you can possibly get a catalog from them:

Digi-Key Corporation
701 Brooks Avenue South
Thief River Falls, MN 56701-0677
USA
(800) 344-4539

or

JAMECO
1355 Shoreway Road
Belmont, CA 94002-4100
(800) 831-4242

Hope this helps.

Phoenix, Arizona has three or four large commercial stores and a pretty
great surplus store.  E-mail me for more details.

I'm in Utah....Bell Industries carries PIC.  In California, Mouser now
carries PIC as well.  The Microchip HQ is in Chandler Arizona...just
outside Mesa.  I was going to stop there last time I was down there, but
ran out of time.

Future Electronics is Microchip's largest distributor worldwide.  In
addition, they have technical support and expertise that may help you out.
Their Future Active Industrial (FAI) offices and Active stores are great
sources for parts and supplies.  Microchip's web site lists these branches
as does Futures' at http://www.Future.ca.

If you visit California around Santa Clara and San Jose you will find
electronics surpluss under every rock.  Check Electronics Now magazine for
adds from the surpluss stores.  Don't bother with Radio Shack.

That's been my impression of RS/Tandy in Australia as well, but I recently
saw this article in the E-Zine LockerGnome  <http://www.lockergnome.com/>
that may change my mind, if it happens...

"The freestanding stores would target engineers, technicians,
serious hobbyists and repair/maintenance workers who have the need

throw more out my way... there's not enough computer stores around
where I live.  I'm tired of ordering through catalogs, darnit.

Sorry about late reply, but I've just been on a biz trip to Coober Pedy,
and am faced with some 200 odd emails.

Mike,

They've already started this changeover locally.  The parts section, which
used to be just the back corner of one of the 2 local stores, has been
expaned to close to 1/3 the footage of the store - about 3 times its
previous size.  The manager said that this is intended to be a 'permanment'
change.

They still aren't a Digi-Key, though.
