Post by thread:Trouble in paradise; Warp3 PIC programmer

I was in paradise when I received my Warp3 PIC programmer. I had so much fun making LCD display to repeat my name millions of times and such for about a month. Then, without a warning, Warp3 refused to talk to the PC yesterday. I couldn't even get it to read the devices I was using. I used C84 as well as C74, but all to no avail... So I wept my self to sleep. Knowing that the paradise is lost even for few days while Warp3 is shipped for repairs, I tried using it this afternoon before I pack it. And lo and behold, the thing is working with the original Warp3 software! It also works with Warp3.2 beta10! Alas, it still doesn't work as it used to with Warp3.2 beta3. So, my comrades, have you experienced anything strange as such? In case you are wondering, I did power cycle the entire system, including the PC, Warp3, stereo, and the cell phone last night. But that didn't help my troubles. And it's even more strange that it's working so well today from such seemingly unrecoverable error. Any comments and tips on Warp3 is welcome. PS: For anyone with Warp3 PIC programmer in Win3.x, try setting the exclusive execution mode in your PIF file. It made a dramatic difference, from working about 50% of the time without comm errors to working over 99% of the time without errors. Of course, this is in addition to setting the background and foreground tasks as specified in the HTML document (manual). Anyone know how to do this in Win95? For the programs that will allow it, select the icon or file name, push the right mouse button and select properties. About 5 tabs will come up. One of those (I don't remember which) will give you that option. Most of my programs have two tabs in the properties menu, and some have only one. The Win95 help menu will tell you how to change file properties. If anyone knows how to get around this problem, please tell us!

Warp3 PIC Programmer? Where do I find these? Seriously, I am considering buying a programmer. I could just build one of the serial elcheapo pic'84 programmers, and might do that anyway since they are handy, but the main reason I want to use pic's requires a lot more I/O than an '84 has. So, I am thinking about a programmer. I am aware of the Picstart Plus and it seems like a reasonable deal. Anyone out there want to share your opinions about this unit? Are there other inexpensive programmers that will handle a fairly full range of PICs that I should consider? Windows exe's only have one tab, that tells you about the file. Most msdos have the five tabs you talk about. You could try creating shortcut file to the exe, and setting properties in this, if you don't get the 5 tabs (shortcut files seem to act like pif files, in this instance) MikeS <@spam@mikesmith_ozKILLspamrelaymail.net>

re: PIC Programmers David, I use the Parallax programmer which covers the 12C5xx, 16C5xx, 16Cxxx, and the 14000 PIC line. The 17x series requires another programmer. I also use their assembler which comes with it. They have been good about timely upgrades which are free for software and fairly low-cost for the occasional firmware upgrade. Since Microchip is fairly `prolific' keeping up with them can be a `chore' for those who write programmer software. I'm expecting an update to cover the new 16C76/77 chips in the next few weeks. As far as their assembler, it uses Intel-style syntax (ie: 8051, etc) but also recognizes Microchip's syntax. One thing it lacks is user-defined macros and I would to see a symbol cross-reference. Other than that, I prefer their assembler as I was already use to the Intel syntax as well as other minor differences from MPASM. Note, these low-cost programmers are not `industrial-strength' but are suitable for engineering and I've run hundreds of chips though my programmer. The only other complaint I can think of is that the Parallax programmer software does not work well under Windows on many machines including fast Pentiums. I've had no problems when rebooting in the MSDOS Mode under Windows 95. The programmer package is around $200 with manual, power supply, cable, etc, and I think there is still a kit for around $100.
