'Steppers'

Hi folks

This is slightly off the line BUT: I need to build a maze-solving robot
using a PIC. I've got a couple of stepper motors from old disk drives
etc. Some are Japan Servo Co and Teac. Any idea where I can find
datasheets/internal wiring diagrams?

Thanks a million!

How many wires do these motors have?  If four, ther are probably bipolar
(needing an H-Bridge such as the L293) to drive them.  If they have five or
six wires, then you should use something like a ULN2003A.

Take a look at the EDE1200 Stepper Motor Datasheet as well as our new
EDE1200 FAQ; this should answer some more of your questions and get you up
and running with the steppers.

I've been playing with a Teac stepper removed from an old 5.25 inch drive,
it has six wires, 2 brown, yellow, red, blue, and white. The P/N on the
motor is 14769070-10.

All I did was feed the 2 brown wires from a positive supply and connect the
other 4 to a ULN2803 (using one of Don's relay boards). I just wrote the PIC
code to use the wires in the order on the connector - as above, yellow, red,
blue, and white. It worked first time :-).

You should be able to work out the winding arrangement by measuring the
resistances between the leads. You probably have two centre-tapped
windings. A web search will turn up some info on the energising sequence
you need. I recently built a simple interface for the printer port on my
PC (using four BD139 power transistors) and wrote a little C program to
drive a small 12 V stepper motor. It was quite easy.

Hi David
What is the URL of you web site?
I tried http://www.mindspring.com/~dfansler but got an invalid syntax message from IE4.
IMHO The tilde (~) is the problem.

It works fine for me with Netscape. Why not ditch IE4 and get a real browser?

Brain - I am at loss!  I clicked on both of the url's in your email and was
taken to the web site.  The ~ is needed.  I am running IE 4 & I also just
tried int in Netscape 4.05.  The direct link to the stuff for sale is
www.mindspring.com/~dfansler/stufffor.htm
<http://www.mindspring.com/~dfansler/stufffor.htm> .  If you still can not
get there please email me privately and I will send you a copy of the page.
