'Source for LCD'

I am new to the PIC hobby, at least in my case it's a hobby. My first "big"
project requires a Hitachi HD44780 16*2 or 16 * 1 LCD display. Where in the
U.S. can I get this at surplus prices if possible. Is the HD44780 a
controller with the LCD attached or is it separate?

Thanks

Alex,

Check out http://www.bgmicro.com for a selection
of LCD displays that will have that
particular controller (which seems
to be fairly common and an industry
standard) already in place and attached
on the board to which the LCD is soldered.

If you do a search on ebay for the hd44780, you'll find a bunch of them. A pair
of displays, 24X2 for $12.99

One good place is BG Micro (download their flyer from
http://www.bgmicro.com).  The Hitachi controller is pretty standard and will be
included on the LCD display.   What it means is that it provides a standard
interface for you to use in writing to the display.  In BGMicro's technical
documentation section you should be able to download the datasheet for this
controller.  Most PIC books have a section on using LCD displays.  For
example, I believe Benson's Pic'N Up the Pace covers this (or is it Easy
Pic'N?).

Nearly all 'dot-character' LCDs have a HD44780 (or compatible)
controller. 7-segment LCDs are mostly direct drive (separate
controller), full graphic LCDs have various controllers.
