John asks what I did to prevent it...
I worked for the BBC over the summer and they bought me a PICSTART
kit for a project, which I subsequently borrowed and did it by
parallel means....
No serial solution to setting CP...or so _I've_ found.
Interested to know if someone's suggestion of sending the parallel
codes does actually work, and I just mucked it up....

I've used a PICSTART-16B (V1.6 firmware) and although I can't be sure
how it deals with bulk erase, I do know that it uses _serial_mode_
programming for 16C84s.  Which, by the way, is useful to know if you
have a PICSTART but really wanted something for In-System Programming
(ISP); all you need to do is hook up 4/5 wires (Vpp, Vdd (maybe), RB6,
RB7 and GND) from the PICSTART ZIF socket to your application circuit.
Before I built my own ISP circuit that's what I used to do.  Perhaps
things have changed with the latest PICSTART firmware.

As I mentioned previously, I found the parallel codes for bulk erase work
in serial mode.  As I seem to be the only person to have said that, and
Bryan doesn't think it's true, I guess it would be helpful if someone
else could give some input to the discussion.
