YES YES. This is a great idea. Can this be done?

no, no, bad idea! what about vacation and business trips? or
students going home for break? in the deathgrip of finals?

the "boing" mechanism someone mentioned would be better.

*grin* you could make the potential subscriber take an
"unsubscribe test", where he/she would have to demonstrate
the capability to unsubscribe before being allowed to join :)

of course, we could do what the newsgroups do, and have someone
in charge of posting a "FAQ" for the listserver once a month. in
fact, we already have a FAQ, sort of. just use the message that
the listserver sends you when you joined.

Parallax has a "boing" thing on their lists which solves the problem
nicely.  If you reply to this message from the listserv, you are
automatically unsub'd.  If you delete it, you are safe.

The Parallax list server also adds a 2 line trailer to every message with
specific instruction on how to un-subscribe.  I am sure this wastes less
bandwidth than the we are using discussing it!

It is easy to accidentally delete the initial instructions on how to stop
the messages.  Of course, the most obvious way of getting off the list at
that point is ask the list itself (as politely as possible and then stand
back..)  :)

I think Parallax's approach gives everybody what they want.
