Thanks for all the good information people gave me on Assemblers and such.
After poking around on the net, I downloaded Microchips MPLAB. It looks
really great, and I was able to create and step throught the sample code.
I noticed the Microchip has a built-in C compiler (MPLAB-C). Is anybody
using this? Is it the same as the CCS C Compiler? If I buy a copy of the
compiler, should I get it from Microchip, or from CCS?
Also, the microchip simulator, I assume, uses a PC as the CPU (siumlation
of a pic chip), with some sort of device probe which plugs into the target
circuit. Is any body using this, and does it work well? Does it handle
things like RS232 (is it fast enough), inturrupts and such? I couldn't find
a price on it, where can I get one, and how much do the cost?
TIA
Randy

It is not the same the same. Microchip use a licensed version of the
Bytecraft
compiler, but it is VERY outdated. The back-up service offered by
Microchip
on MPLABC *stinks*.
MPC (the Bytecraft compiler) has come a long way, and bugfixes are done
immediatly unlike Microchip's (Hey Microchip! Yoohooo! Helloooo!) quick
turnaround six month service.

The PICMaster emulator is one of the truly good development tools made
by Microchip.
It is ouch-expensive, but it generally pays itself off in a jiffy.
The simulator runs from MPLAB, the IDE used for the PIC.
