If MPALC is dead, why are Microchip distributing it with PICSTART??
I bought my set last week, and it has MPSTART, MPALC, MPSIM and a sample
set of files....

look at your disk.  Mpstart, mpsim and mpalc are all on the same disk.
Mpasm is on another.  Microchip just has not taken the time to remaster
their production disk.  They found it simpler just to add one.  Well,
thats my guess at least :)

There are a lot of PICSTARTS in the distribution pipe line,
especially all the way to europe I guess. The one I bought
recently has MPASM. Also MPALC will never support the new
flavors of PICs. All of the PICSTARTS include information
on obtaining the latest software. Microchip has made it clear
that migration to MPASM is the way to go.

Microchip has produced thousands of PICSTARTS in the previous months.  It
takes a while for these units with MPALC to get cleared in the
distribution pipeline.  Some are opened, than re-shrinked with an
additional disk with MPASM added.  There are new production units with
MPASM only being shipped.  For the next couple of months, it may be luck
of the draw on what you may receive.  MPASM is available for free
download  on the Microchip BBS available via your local Compuserve access
number.

MPALC is still being supported, but users will be
encouraged to migrate to MPASM.  No new processors will be ported to it.
So dead is a bit premature as a discription, but MPALC is lookint a bit
pale...

Hope this clears this issuea a bit,

Note that the older issues of picstart (I have one too) also have an
older edition of MPSIM that can't accept the symbol file output by
MPASM. I think there's an error in the MPASM user guide regarding this -
the version of MPSIM I got was later than the revision reported to support
the /c switch, but use of this switch still causes an error message.
(Maybe it just wants /C ? I didn't try that ..)

So if you go ftp-ing for a copy of MPASM, get a new copy of MPSIM as well.

wrt to Alex's comment that ftp.sics.se would shortly be up to date,
the newer versions of both of these are on the server, but they're not
accessible yet : MPASM has length 0 and the others have the wrong read
permissions.

A plea for support for an MPALC feature in future versions of MPASM :
MPALC was unfussy about end-of-line behaviour and would happily
assemble files with linefeed-only separators. MPASM seems to insist
on MS-DOS format CR-LF separators, which is something of a nuisance
if you want to use these tools in a Unix development environment.
Odd, too, since I thought most C libraries hid the difference behind
the stdio library.

For problems with protection etc on the mchipsoft directory, please
mail a message to ftpmasterspamspam_OUTsics.se, with a cc to me. Although I
appear as the file owner, out systems people handle the FTP things.
(I really wish Microchip could become FTPable soon...)

The zero-size file (mpa10200.zip) probably became zero due to a
faulty transfer from Microchip in England to SICS.
