DO NOT, EVER, exceed the current rating on the individual drivers.  These
drivers have very little tolerance for over-current.  I have seen them fail
consistently (shorted, usually the whole package) when subjected to repeated
momentary peak currents of 2x the rated current, even though the power
dissipation was well within the rating.
