Hi PICer friends,
sorry for this msg just a little OT, but I think this kind of problem can
interest some of our.
I have listen the possibility to connect two PC WIN95/98 between them, using
two network card, with an UTP cat 5 cable and without the hub.
Anyone know or have been experience about this type of direct connection?
Anyone have some information about the naming of the wire/line?
Thanks
Ciao
Leo

All you need is a "crossover cable". Works fine.

Download "The Hardware Book" by Joakim Ogren and it gives you the pinout.

Without a hub, you need a 'crossover' cable. The hub provides a crossover
or link port and the rest are 'regular' connections.

I believe his question was not only related to the cross cable,
but also how to preset Windows95/98 software to do that...

Windows:
Start --> config. --> control panel ---> network
add client for Microsoft Networks
add adapter (ne2000?)
ADD PROTOCOL NETBEUI
[Add protocol ipx/spx] optional
ADD SHARED PRINTERS AND FILES
re - start the PC
My Pc
right click DRIVE C
Shared
Shared as ... (NEW NAME FOR NETWORK)
NETWORK ENVIRONMENT
in network environment side the other computer, if it
is, to assign a letter of
unit
the unit also shares from a session DOS
Also it is possible to be connected from a computer in MSDOS
with another one in win95/98 using the system of network of win311 (without
running Windows)

i think both computers must have the same workgroup name in the
identification tab of the network settings (hub or no hub).

Ah! Now I'm passably curious as to how you do that?

No. You just need to click on "entire network" to see the other workgroup.
You can always specify the computer name and get to the files that way, no
need to specify the workgruop at all.

There was a Microsoft program called Workgroup Add-on for MSDos which
allowed a Dos machine to talk to a Windows for Workgroups Network - I don't
know if it is still available or how it goes with Win95/98
