'[OT?] UL and FCC certification'

I need an advice from experienced people.
What would be the best way to start with UL and FCC certification?
Other questions: we have system consisting of 7 boards in a cage, almost all
of them with 1-2 controllers (including PICs, of coarse). Does each board
require certification or only the whole system? What about remote controls?
Where is the best place to get information?
What kind of certification is required for sale to other countries?
Thank you in advance.
Please respond to the list or directly.

Sorry, I missed few things. System I am talking about is in general a
conferencing (audio & video mixer/switcher) system to be installed in
courtrooms and businesses. All remote controls are connected through 485
9600 baud network. Does it change anything? Does it still need to be
certified?
Thank you.

Gennady,

The best place to start with agency certification is a good test lab to
learn about the different standards of various international agency
requirements.  I've used CKC Laboratories, Inc. quite a bit.  They're a
reliable company - HP, Microsoft, KLA-TENCOR, etc. use them.  Check out
their websight:

http://www.ckc.com/

From there, you can link to other sights.  I think this will definitely
help get you started.

As for your certification of systems/boards, I would think the entire
system certification needs to be performed (but don't take my word for
it - everyone's product situation is different), but if you are selling
single boards that plug into systems other than your own, they may need
to be individually tested and certified for compliance as well.  Check
with the qualified experts of any decent certification / testing lab.

Good Luck! ;-)

Cheers,

Chuck Mauro

Thanks to everyone who responded to my inquire on UL and FCC certification.
Our system is already in production for quite a few years. So I believe
(according to your posts) it would be too expensive and time consuming to go
through certification process. But from other side it's not consumer system,
so may be its not going to create a problem (didn't before...)
Thank you again.
