Hyperterminal is hopeless for this I find.

track down a copy of Win3.1 and copy Terminal.exe and .hlp over and you will
find that works beautifully.

Check out the Bray Terminal.exe page:

http://bray.velenje.cx/avr/terminal/

It is definitely my favorite RS232 debug program.

ZOC from http://www.emtec.com

The nice thing is you can also telnet to an IP address, and supports
scripting.  You can also set the scrollback buffer to be really large.

If you aren't too lazy, try to write your own Terminal Software for your
PIC.
It sounds harder than it is, if you use the Python Skripting Language
(availible for all OS types) and the USPP Python Module from Isaac Barona.

You'll need only very few lines of code (three or so) to get the Byte from
the serial interface, or to put it there for the PIC to recieve it!

Trying to write your own terminal software would have the advantage, that
you could develop specialised user interfaces for your later PIC projects.
(For example a wheather station could profit from a special GUI rather than
from a terminal.)

Python itself is easy to learn even for a beginner and is well documented.

btw. when you use Python, your code could easily be ported to another OS...

Surprise surprise, I am not the only Python proponent!

As for a terminal program: my XWisp software has a very simple TTY
emulator, that can be used independent of the main function of XWisp
(driving my programmer). XWisp is written in Python, and it is portable
to a lot of OS'es. A problem is that access to serial ports is by itself
not portable, but there is a Python library that hides the non-portable
aspects (I did not make it, but a copy comes with XWisP). But on windoze
you need the Python Win32 extensions to let it work.

We've been using Hyperterminal (version that comes with Win2k) for
communication with our production equipment testers (based on PICs) for
years, and it's worked flawlessly. I would start with Hyperterminal since
you already have it.

Clear, but USPP is written compleatly in Python itself and provides a
universal interface method to access the serial port. It's quiet easy and
portable (proofed it by myself)... As said, three lines of code are enough
to access the serial interface.

Oh and Wouter, you'll never be alone ;-)

On windoze USPP requires win32all (which is defintely not pure Python),
exactly like Chris Liechti library that I use for XWisp. And it is more
limited, for instance no access to the handshake lines.

These are more advanced features, of course... But for Terminal purpose the
USPP is good enough, and pretty easy to handle, even for somone who didn't
programm in Python yet.
I don't know about the module you used, but USPP worked fine for me until
now.
Next time I do something with the serial port I'll try out the module you
have used...

RS232 Hex Comm Tool

http://www.rs232pro.com

30 day trial with time-out, but well worth the registration.  Let's you
send and receive Hex or ASCII, write simple scripts (actually, a batch of
pre-defined strings), and works extremely well for the USART testing that
I am currently doing!
