Andy, I am also interested in using a low cost pressure sensor with a
PIC to measure soil water tension. Since I have no previous experience
in this area could you please suggest where to begin.

I have used the Motorola Senseon stuff. Check the design-net web page.
Search Alta Vista for "senseon pressure" and you'll find it pretty quick.
