'Picstart+ Power supply - Dead again :-('

Hello all,
I've got a Picstart+ programmer, and just now the power supply died
(Microchip power adaptor, Model PTF09075I , Switched-mode type). That's
the second one in less than a year. Does anyone else have this kind of
problems with it ?
Does anyone know what part died ? Maybe I can replace it myself ...
I can ask another one from the local sales rep, but that means that I have
to
pay sending of the package (they first want to see the dead supply, before
they send a repalcement) , resulting in a higher price than when I replace
it
with a standard adaptor in the first place :-(

Mine died as well. Spend two hours trying to fix it. Then it went
straight to the bin.
Build a 9V PSU with a LM317. Been programming with it for a month now.
No problem.

PS: My patience is very short with Switch mode PSU's

Hi,
I have had a few PSU's die. A while ago now though.
The part that failed on my supplies was a large 1W ish 1R or 10R res. (that
sort of order).
The part went O/C. It appeared to have burnt. I fitted the same value but
larger W.
I think that it was quite obvious which was the resistor at fault. Take the
lid off and have a look. I can't remember exactly.
Hope it helps.
Rgds...

I did, when the programmer was plugged into the computer (24 hr) supply.
It seems to overheat (there's a large, and fairly obvious, resistor inside
which needs to be replaced) if left on all the time. Maybe one of those '1
hour' switches would help? The PSU I use now had the resistor replaced
about 2 years ago and is still going strong.
