'Pickit 2 In circuit programming'

Hi, I just finished finished putting together my first in-circuit
programmable PCB board and my first circuit with any 18f series chip.

However, when I plugged my Pickit 2, it could not find the chip.   Did check
my soldering and I think all the connections are good.

Now I am wondering if I made a mistake with how I connected the ICSP jack.

This i166.photobucket.com/albums/u83/adasta/usbrocketschematic.png
is the schematic.  Does this look right?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,
Adam

The 330ohm pullup on the MCLR line is way too low, should be a 27k or so
It's a little confusing to use VCC and VDD for the same wire.
for the rest it looks good

Hmm.  I was just looking over my circuit and realized I used a PIC 18LF4450
instead of the PIC 18F4550 that I should have. (ARG!!!!!)

Could that be causing my programming problems?

Can the pickit 2 handle an LF part?  I am not even sure what that L means.

Thanks again,
Adam

The 'L' is for low power.  I believe the programming specs are the same.

According to the latest MPlab pickit2 readme (7.52 interrim release) no 18f devices are supported at all!!

LF means the chip was tested for a wider operating voltage range on the low side, and being able to run
at a higher clockspeed for a given operating voltage.

For Pickit 2, I was going by this list:

http://www.microchip.com/stellent/idcplg?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE&nodeId=1406&dDocName=en027813

This says that most actually are.  I tried reinstalling my Pickit software
thinking I had an older verison, but it still gives me that same error.  No
device attached or no supported device.

Are there any common PCB board mistakes that I should search for?

I checked all the connections with a multimeter and they seem to all be
going to the right places.

Thanks again,
Adam

I have to correct myself here
The pickit2 software can do a lot more devices than the current mplab release
including the 18(L)F4550 and 18(L)F4450

Did you try replacing the pullup on Vpp (330) by something in the 20kohm to 100kohm range yet?
This might be the problem, another thing to check if the chip gets Vdd from the power supply OR
the pickit2

Someone has already called out that your pullup on VPP/MCLR is WAY WAY too strong.

During first time programming before you get LVP disabled you may need to tie PGM low.

One of your pics VDD pins (pin 28) doesn't appear to be actually connected to the VDD net

Those are the only problems i can spot on a quick check over the cuircuit.

I still have not gotten it working....

Does anyone have a schematic and board for 40 pin pic Pickit2
programming adapter?

I am screwing something up consistently.  Maybe if i see/use someone
else's I will be able to get it to work.

Thanks again,

Adam
