Anyone know how I can convert my EPIC PicStart Plus to an in-circuit
programmer? I know there is a cable I could buy, but I am limited to DIY
(Do It Yourself) projects and freeware.

Any Help Appreciated

Hi Robert,

Yes, I have the same programmer and it is very easy. There are many ways
to do this, but I think that the best and easiest way is to use a 5 pole,
double throw rotary switch (available from Mouser Electronics,
1-800-346-mouse, http://www.mouser.com). You will also need a 10 pin IDC socket,
a high reliability 18-pin socket (for 16C/F84), and an 18-pin DIP header.
Just place the rotary switch and the 18-pin socket on a piece of PC
board, and run ribbon cable to the IDc connector and to the header. You
wire it so that the lines that are not involved in programming are
permanently connected between the socket and the header. THe rest of the
lines (Vdd,Vss,MCLR,and two others which I cannot remember at this point,
just look at http://www.microchip.com at the programming specifications, the
first page of the sheet lists them). These lines are switched between the
header and the IDC connector (going to the programmer). You can determine
the pinout of the programmer's IDC header by using an ohmmeter to check
conductivity to each of the 5 pins involved in the programming. If you
want, I can take a look at the one I built and tell you the pinout, but I
am at work right now and it would probably be quicker for you to just
check it with the meter.

I built mine in a day, it cost about $10, and it works great!
