'PICkit1 experience?'

Has anyone had any experience with the PICkit1 from MChip?
It looks like an inexpensive way to introduce a few of
my programmers to PICs.
While it claims to support 8 and 14 pin flash pics, I'm
also wondering if it would support larger pics through
a homebrew ICSP cable.
As cheap as it is, even if it's only a "trainer" it might
be worth the money. If it'll double as a USB ICSP programmer,
so much the better.
Any experiences or opinions are welcomed.

Have you read the manual that they have on the web site? It looks like
it could be used for any of the chips in the family, though you might
have to make an adapter or adapter cable.
One nice thing is that the USB protocol is actually documented
(according to the manual) and they include the source code for the
programmer app. This could be used to support (say) Linux.
