    I was just on the Microchip web site, and all the 17C4x devices are
    shown as being "In Production" with no mention of being discontinued.
    Sounds like the Maplin rep had his head up his...

I was just at a PICMICRO seminar recently, and there was no talk at all of
discontinuing the PIC17xx, or ANY PICMICRO device for that matter.  In
fact, Microchip seems to be very committed to supporting its older
architectures, or developing enhanced (i.e. low-voltage, or flash) versions
of them.
