I'm about to have my own "First PIC Experience" and I'm really nervous about
it. We're building a new device that needs a couple of 12-bit A/D's and a
UART. It seems like we can save some money by doing the A/D on-PIC which
means that it looks like my choice is going to be the PIC16C773. This PIC
seems a little new and I'm hoping for some input before we dive into it.
The things I'm worried about are:
1. Availability. Can we get some JW units now? We'll eventually be buying
minimum quantities of 1,000 OTP versions. All of the dealers (Digi-Key,
Pioneer) show this part in "call" status which worries me a little.
2. Lifespan. We'd like this product to last for 5 years before redesigning
it. Does it look like this chip will be around?
3. Tools. It seems like the Microchip tools support this chip already.
Any caveats here?
OK, I'll admit it...I'm a software guy. This is my first dive into a real
product! Should I call Microchip and talk to an FAE about some of this?
Will they talk to me?
What else am I missing?
Thanks for any help you can provide!
