I'm not sure if this applies, but check AN656 from microchip.

In the soon to be released PicNPoke Real World Port Interface and
Programmer, there will be source code included for a 16F84 to program a
non EEPROM type of PIC. eg 16C74. It runs off the serial port though,
not with in built RAM for code storage, which I guess would have to be
downloaded from somewhere.

Go to http://www.picpoint.com and look at the YAPP pic programmer project.
It does exactly what you are describing.  It uses either a 16F84,
or 16C54 / 16C56 as the "brain" of the box.  It will program
16F84, 16C84, 16C6X, 16C7X devices.  It interfaces with the PC via
an *standard* RS-232 interface.  Mine is in a hand-held sized box.
The web page is in Italian, but the source files and schematic
for the project are commented / written in English.  Just download
the files & open them up!

I hope this helps!

My 16x84 programmer is 16x84-based (http://www.xs4all.nl/~wf/wouter/pic/wisp).
I don't know what you mean by handheld, mayby you could add a 9v battery?

Wouter.

Hi,
I think this information is not worthy but interesting:

the PicStart+ is also this kind of device: it programs with a PIC17C44 all
kind of PICS <grin>

Sorry I should have been more specific!!! I meant a programmer without the
need of a PC!! I want to use my TI calculator to programme a F84.
Has anybody done this before with the HP48 ??
Bye
Javier
