'PIC - L293B'

Does anyone have any experience using a PIC and a L293B quad push-pull
driver IC?
I am trying to control a DC motor (both speed and direction).  The motor can
draw
1A max.  The PIC will accept (occasional) serial commands such as forward,
backward,
and panic stop, and while it is not busy receiving commands it will generate
PWM
and direction signals for the L293B.  If this is not the best approach, I
would be
interested in hearing others.

Thanks alot.

I've done a PID controller with the 16c71 and the L293 (plenty of them
on old MFM hard disk drives). Works well.
