Hello,
I am looking for a good cheap PCB program.  This is for hobbyist use, so
I only need it to do double sided boards.
  Any recommendations?

Thanks in Advance,

Alan G. Smith

Easytrax by Protel is free and can be found on the web.

I've been using Easy-PC for years, the entry level package is very
reasonably priced:

Rich,
Have you tried IVEX??????  Its the worst piece of crap I have ever seen.  I
bought it and lost several layout due to GPF errors bad programing and crptic
interface.  It wasent worth the bits it was made of!!!!!!

Yes I am trying to learn the software.  The fact is, its the only software I
could find so far that would run.

I have tried Easytrax but every time I try to run it, I get a Run Time Error.

I get this error on my Pentium with Windows95 and also on my DOS based 386.
With the knowledge that I have about computers, I am just S. O. L.  when it
comes to knowing how to fix this problem.

Sorry if I posted some bad software.

Probably the graph.drv file was incompatible with your video card.  Protel
hasn't brought out new drivers for years, so unless you have compatibility
with an old card...  I wish they had a VESA driver - that would solve a lot
of problems.  They supply a source skeleton for the graph.drv, but I
wouldn't want to expend that much effort on a dos app.

you might try QCAD from Microcad in Toronto.
http://www.echo-on.net/microcad/

DOS based. It is not very intuitive but once you get the
hang
of the interface you can add components to the library and
modify existing components.  It has auto-route
and auto-place.  I have used it to produce a board
5.5" X 7" with about 300 pins.

It autoroutes in about 1 second and optimizes is about 75
seconds.

Cost is US$95.00 for 700 pins, $195.00 for 1000 pins.
