Sadly Adobe holds the rights to the format.. I believe anyone is allowed to
write a reader, but only they are allowed to write software to create PDF's.

Anyway, the capture utility can be found at:
http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/capture.html

$895 for a 20 000 page license, $14000 for an unlimited license

Cheers
Roland

PS. Are there any readers beside acrobat available?? - I find it very akward
and irritating...

I am creating PDF files using GhostView/GhostScript which can be found on
the intenet.

created another printer such HP Laser Jet 4 Post Script and print your
document using this driver. Then use GhostView to read the postscript files
and then print to a file using the PDFwrite filter.

GhostView can also be used as a viewer of PDF files, but, the quoality will
be not as good as Acrobat reader.

LinearView v1.0 had it on the CD for FREE!

Say what?

First of all, I believe that Ghostscript will convert postscript into
PDF files.  You'd need to have word97 to get from the doc file to
postscript, however (you probably need than anyway.  Actually, aren't
there now some cheap "viewers" for .DOC files that can print?  They
might work too, perhaps with some loss of fetaures.)

Second of all, "adobe capture" is a heavy-duty OCR utility for converting
existing printed documented into PDF files.  The program for creating PDF
files from existing computer documents is "Acrobat Exchange" (simulates a
printer, creates PDF file) or "Acrobat Distiller" (creates PDF file from
postscript documents.)  The Exchange/Distiller package is part of "Adobe
Acrobat", which sells for (MSRP) of $295 (no page limits.)  Acrobat reader,
of course, is freeware...

AFAIK, the free word viewer from microsoft views and prints (but does not
edit) word files.

You have to buy Adobe Acrobat, about $200USD.  I know, I just bought it from
CompUSA.

But I don't see any mechanism in Word97 to save as a PS file.  Am I missing
something?

If you do a "print to file" it will save it as a .prn file.  I'm pretty
sure this is actually a .ps file with a different extension.  If you
change the .prn to .ps, I know that ghostscript/ghostview can read it.

btw, the above service is not downloadable software, you zip your .ps file,
upload it to the ftp site, and then download the file in .pdf format.

Install a Windows postscript printer driver, and then using that driver,
print to file.

The Winter '99 issue of Adobe Magazine talks about using a "...special Word
macro, PDFMaker 1.0 for Word 97 for Windows (it's not available for the
Macintosh)..." but it talks about using it *with* Acrobat Distiller (and
PDFWriter with reduced functionality). It's available at
http://www.adobe.com/supportservice/custsupport/download.html . They don't
refer to any free creator program.

To maintain font integrity (if you use fonts other than the standards of
time new roman and arial) check the font settings such that the you
download the font outline to the file...
