Hi All
Got a very interesting phone call from our microchip rep--apparently as of
March 1, all sales are being handled factory direct or through
distribution--no more rep network.

Sounds like a potential disaster to me.

We had electro-mark which was dropped by MicroChip, heard it the same day,

The guys build you up, then get the shaft.
Typical.
I think uChip will live to regret this.

I've always hated the rep network! They don't serve any function that I can
see other than getting in the way. As long as there are still FAE's I'd
rather order chips through distribution or factory direct. The real issue is
sample availability, what the chips cost and what the minimum order is.
Eliminating the middle-man and doing web order collection for big orders and
distributor orders for minimum quantity reduction seems like a good idea.

I'd like to hear why I'm wrong on that....

I was just informed by a colleague that there might not be anymore
Microchip seminars; at least not here in Denver! He was told this by the
local Rep.

Of course they may not be a rep for long and since they do the local
support for the seminar there may be no seminar. In fact, I went to the
Microchip web site and looked for the date of the embedded seminar for
Denver. Well there was a date, all right, but no location. The
availability was marked as "N/A".

This all sounds very bad. I guess this is one reason we DO need rep's.

I'd sure like to know how you even got this far.  I went to the embedded
control seminar page, went down to where you are supposed to be able get a
schedule of cities, clicked on Americas and was bounced out to the catalog
page.  I can't find any way to get a cities listing at all.  If you have a
URL for this, please post it.  :)

I know there are Microchip people monitoring this list.  I'm not sure who
is managing this portion of your website, but it has had ongoing
problems.  Last year the on-line registration didn't work properly, but at
least it was possible to get a list of locations.

I'm really not trying to be overly critical here, but I thought you should
know that there is a problem.

Thanks,

John Hansen

How strange "America's" takes me here:
http://buy.microchip.com/catalog.asp?TID=350

and then "United States" takes me here:
http://buy.microchip.com/catalog.asp?TID=353&UID=247248

Microchip has several servers. Maybe thats the difference?

Definitely something screwing going on.  Both of those pages automatically
redirect me to:

http://www4.microchip.com/catalog.asp

I assume that www4 does indeed indicate another server.   I hope they get
this fixed.  As it is, I can't even find out which cities still have seminars.

I was able to place my order for the 08/09/2000 Seminar in Rancho Bernardo
at the Raddison (centrally located in San Diego and... right next door to my
office at a very high class hotel)

Hope to see Walter, Kelly, John, Andy, and who ever else in the S.D. area
who can make it. Given my activity level, it will probably be the only
chance I'll have to meet any of you. <GRIN> Kelly and Andy live a stones
throw from me and I just haven't been able to get two hours reserved a few
days in advance to make a lunch or dinner with either.

I'm actually going more to have a chance to meet local engineers than
anything else... well, maybe to poke at Microchip a little about their ICD
plans, MPLab bug list, and support for hobbyists.

I wouldn't waste your breath ! MPLAB 5 still has bugs that are several
years old.
