'New application note at Microchip: remarkable proj'

There is a new application note at Microchip's site. Its title is:
       "Engineer's Assistant Using a PIC16F84A"
and it can be downloaded from:
ftp://ftp.microchip.com/Download/Appnote/Category/PIC16/00689A.PDF
the document size is around 230Kb.

It is a very interesting instrument with a very low count part. It features
a logic probe, a logic state analyzer, a serial (RS-232) code receiver, a
frequency counter and a battery manager (the instrument utilizes
rechargeable batteries).
The down side is a somewhat complex PCB. In fact, there note does not have a
PCB drawing (the traces). It has just an artwork of the component side
showing component layout. At least it does have the schematics and the MPASM
source code.

Apart from that, a new version of MPLAB is out. It can be downloaded from:
ftp://ftp.microchip.com/Donwload/Tools/PICmicro/DevEnv/MPLABi/Software/v40/V
414

Enjoy!

Actually, the whole instrument seems as a pretty clever design. I think
that I will try to build one, just for fun. It is only pitty, that there is
no .ASM file included. To retype the whole program from PDF file will be
pretty boring.

The only thing which I am missing in this system is some kind of I2C
protocol analyser. But maybe with bigger PIC, this function can be added.

Do you remember a 'select text/select graphics' tool in Adobe Acrobat
reader?
a select in a *.pdf asm code section with a copy/paste in the mplab ide,
you have no need to retype anything..

Pavel,

There are probably a number of ways of extracting the code without
having to re-type it. Try selecting the text in ADOBE ACROBAT and using
EDIT/COPY. Then call up WORD with a new document - EDIT/PASTE and
write the thing out as a text only file.

Haha! I have it for you! Both the ASM and PCB layout(in protel's dos
format, sorry). I got them straight from the author, Voja Antonic.

Have fun.

By the way, a 16F84A is not required. Use a 16F84.

Cheers,
Bob

Hi Everyone,

Since I tracked down the needed files, would someone who has Protel be so
kind as to do me the favor of making postscript or pdf or hpgl files of
the top, bottom, and stuffing layers? I can place them on my site for
everyone to get.

Many thanks,

Bob
P.S. This list is pretty fast. doing a "tail -f access_log |grep probe"
my terminal screen is moving at a decent clip right now, within 10 minutes
of posting the earlier message.

Bob,

Did someone do this for you yet? If not, I'll send a copy in PDF, OK?

Cheers,

Pavel,

I don't know what version of Acrobat Reader you are using but 3.x can I
know can copy text to the clipboard. This, of course, assumes you are using
Win-woes.

The *.pdf is a list file, also in my version of acrobat at least, there
is no multi page select tool for clipboard use.

If anybody wants just the list from the pdf file, email me directly, I
would send it in a plain txt file.

The extracted .asm file is in zip format available to download at:
http://www.ustr.net/picfiles as 00689A.ZIP (28417 bytes).

I used a text formating program to realign the instructions and
remmarks, it should not generate any problems at the file, but... in any
case just advise.

Hi Wagner,

You must have missed my posting last week. I have the full source code and
also pcboard layouts:

http://www.bobblick.com/bob/projects/probe.zip

Remember you need to program the eeprom area in the 16F84, if you use MPASM
all you need to do is uncomment before the "DE" lines. Then assemble.

Also, a 16F84A is not required. Use a 16F84.

By Monday I'll post pdf's with the board layers flipped all the right
directions for those who wish to make pc boards and don't have Protel(like
me).

Cheers,
Bob

Hi Bob,

I'am also interested from another format of PCB layout. I try to dowload
Evaluation Version of Protel, but unsuccess.

Than'ks in advance.

Hello to the list,

the weekend provided me with some time to look into this AN from MC, and I
have made several discoveries of which I would like to inform you all.
First, the serial inputs can have up to 15 Volts. In the AN schematic there
are two 1K5 resistors to connect this voltage to the input pin of the PIC.
So about 10 mA will flow via the internal protection diodes of the PIC,
possibly lifting the whole supply voltage almost to 15 Volts (the PIC will
not survive this...), or to charge the accumulator with this extra current.
IN any case, very bad engineering done on the circuit. Also the charging
circuit has an overvoltage protection using a simple zener diode connected
directly to GND. This is not good engineering practice, if some high
voltage is indeed present, it would be better to shut off the charging
circuit (consisting of a constant current source), than simply to let it
continue working and dump it all via the zener diode. Apart from this, the
initiation of the charge with "then hold one of the 2 buttons for a longer
time to start charging" is not very well designed.
In my opinion, the overall quality of a design can be seen well when
looking at a part of it, and if I have a look at the external components
connected to the PIC, I am not very happy about this project. It stands to
reason that the software may have some serious flaws too.
Apart from my observations, it still seems a very good design, and I would
gladly have one of these "crates". Perhaps one can update the schematic,
perhaps providing zener protection for the 2 serial inputs and modification
to the charging circuit...let's see.

Greetings to all, and keep on PICing,

Jochen Feldhaar DH6FAZ
