I have a DataErase II EEPROM Eraser that I bought from Digikey about 3
years ago. It has a timer and usually takes almost 1/2hour to erase
a PIC16C74 or PIC16C77. I thinks its time to step up to a more powerfull
eraser. I would like to spend around $100. Is it possible to get a more
effective eraser at that price? If so, please name brands and sources.
Recommendations from experience would be appreciated.

Err, don't you mean *EPROM* instead of EEPROM?,
the later not requiring an eraser at all.

Anyway, my Datarase II takes only 1 minute to erase a 16C73B
but I leave it it for 3 minutes for good measure.

I just got mine.  Have they improved them in the last 3 years??

My Datarase II is pretty old too, but I erase `74JW's in about 6-10 minutes.

My suggestion would be to clean the tube with isopropryl alcohol (tube OFF and
cool, naturally) and see if that makes a difference.

If that fails, then I would then think about a replacement tube not a new unit.

Just my two pence,

Michael

My first DataRase II decided to get sick (it got nice 'n hot - to the
point of melting the plastic casing, and it wasn't erasing chips worth
anything.)  Walling Co., the manufacturer, repairs these free for the
first 6 months, then just for a tiny fee ($9.50 plus $3 S&H) - so my
suggestion is, if cleaning your tube doesn't do it, call them at
800-338-9813, they'll have good ideas, or will suggest returning the
unit.

$12.50 for an "as-new" unit is going to beat the price of any other
unit on the market <G>

I like Walling, they're a decent company.  Though my DataRase II's
don't have timers, that's the III model I thought?  <G>  I got a second
one, so I can erase many /JW parts at once (I expect to make lots of
errors, and I'm a perfectionist <G>)

Ry, I have a DataErase II and I normally erase all PICs in 10 min. I
never tried shorter times. Contact Walling if you are having problems.
They provide good support. Btw, mine is also 3 years old.
