'Microchip Samples'

Ok, I am from the old school.
I am having a hard time understanding what is happening.  I know Microchip
tells us to ask our distributors for samples now.
Does Microchip help the distributors with samples?  Because my distributors
act like I am asking for an unbelivable favor!
Is the policy: Buy what you need, Microchip does not help developers any
more?

Just wondering what others are doing..

Best regards,
Giles

Our Future people can't even figure out simple
part numbers either.  I've almost given up on
trying to get samples through them.

Lately, I just call MChip and get the info from
them and then tell our people at Future what to
order.  It's sad.

She couldn't even figure out how to get ETN21.
I called MChip and they just emailed it to me.

I was told an item that was listed on the MChip
web page was obsolete.  I called MChip and was
given the info about the widget.  Now we've got
them in stock, no thanks to our distributor.

This is not what I am used to from ANY company.

I'm NOT a happy customer.

Thanks for all the replies.
I still wonder if Microchip has any kind of program for the distributors to
sample JW parts.  It just seems dumb to not have this.

Anyway, I sent an e-mail to DigiKey regarding my frustration, and the vice
president of purchasing responded and is taking care of things for me.
He also recognized a need to identify 3rd party developers, as the quantity
question is always quite difficult for me, especially as JW parts will not
be going into production.
Anyway, DigiKey may not be setup to give out (sample) JW parts, but they
will react when you point out a problem and respond very well.

I sent the same e-mail to Microchip.  I feel they should help the
distributors rep them.  I know many other mfgs do it.

Best regards,
Giles

Oh nooooo. I was just starting to look at Microchip parts!!
Well I asked for samples of the MCP3201 12 bit A/D yesterday.
Didn't seem to be any problem apart of not having any in stock,
so I will have to wait a few weeks for them. Lead time 12 wks
for stock. I also asked for updated literature (I have 1993 book),
I was offered a CD, which I guess would be OK nowdays.
See how long it takes.
Of course Maxim have, in my experience, the most fantastic
sample request and supply system. Just order them on their
web page and a few days later they are in your mailbox, even
if you are Down Under (Australia).

On other things I have tried the SET REPRO command
on the mailing list so that I can receive my own postings,
but it doesn't want to know!
Any help with it? I'm flying blind here.

Thanks

There are two parts of the "digikey" answer.

1) If digikey is willing to send out free samples, that's great.
2) Even if digikey ISN'T willing to send out free samples, the fact that
you can order small quantities and get them shipped nearly instantly
sorta does away with most of the reasons for the "free sample racket"
to exist in the first place...

Here in Argentina the "Official Representatives" SELLS the Embedded Handbook
and the CD-ROM.

I get both and many datasheets free requesting directly to Microchip.

A sample?... What is it?... :(

Except that volume users usually get samples many months before
outfits like Digikey get stock in. Of course they often have interesting
flaws to add to the excitement of belonging to such an exclusive club.

why not just get them off the web site and print them. That way you know you
have the latest version. Also you only need to print the pages that are
immediately relevant. Even with a slow modem connection it cannot be that much
of a hassle.

In a large company it can cost you far more hassle / delay time
than the part is worth.  Do you know how many different parts
get tried out?  Our reps oft times come by and give use stuff
they think we can use.  So for MChip to cause us such grief
is not in the norm in the US.

I use my datasheet books to destruction on a project.  We
always have several around.  Using a full sized page print
out is not practical in a lab envirnoment.

There is good news though.  MChip is not all bad.  Our old
factory rep is now employed by MChip directly.  One of the
local MChip managers told me that yesterday.  He said the
company was built on service.  Especially the small to medium
sized customer.  That's partly why they have done so well.
Our guy is in AZ getting some good training.  He will be
back.  That's good.  Well so at least in the San Diego
area we will have our old familiar Jack M back with us.
The Eagle will keep flying.

Hi
Further to my posting regarding samples and literature request,
I wish to let everyone know that the CD rom came in the mail
the next day. So full marks (So far) to the Sydney's Microchip
distributor, Zatek.

(oops I think this is topical...)

Now what date CD did you get?

Ask me how long I've been waiting for 16F876-20/SPs?
Or even the 16F87x Datsheet book?

I spoke to our distributor today.
They had to wait until they had stock on that part.
Not that the parts are coming from any sample stock.
But that I have to wait until they get some in their stock.
What's wrong with this picture??  No sample stock?  Strange.
They say they are shipping those soon.

Microchip seems to be forgetting that quality standards
drop as a whole when you don't force your distributors
to be up to your quality requirements. I'm not sure if
Microchip can assure all their distributors are ISO
certified; if not they should...

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, his right! Microchip representatives here in Argentina are
non-existant in practice. And I'm not sure wether they are to blame
or the country or this lack of support is just Microchip's fault.
