On a similar note -
I've downloaded MPLAB.
Would be convenient to burn chips right from MPLAB.

I have one of those little 3rd party programmers that
uses the parallel port to directly pull the voltages up
and down. Can I somehow tell MPLAB which pins are what
and have it do the programming?

You can add one of Jim Robertson's 4LAB chips and it'll work fine:
http://www.new-elect.com

I've been using one at home for several months now, and it works
flawlessly. I've used it on 16F84, 16C71, 16C73B, 16C63A(a lot of those),
and 16C74A.

Cheers,
Bob

MPLAB does not have built in programming algorithms to handle these
very low cost programmers.  As noted previously, there are other
    solutions.

I'd recommend PICSTART Plus, but, of course, I'm a little biased.
