I am looking for a box to put my latest PIC project in. The box needs to be
hand held and has a 3x4 keypad and a 20x2 LCD display. Does anyone know of
such a beast?
I have "prototyped" a box as follows:
--------------------------------

20x2 LCD

--------------------------------

k p
e a
y d

---------
This was built from two boxes epoxied together. It works but doesn't look
good. It seems to me that this kind of box would be available somewhere.
Any ideas?
Look at DIGI-KEY 1-800-344-4539 catalog no 961 page 330 lower left.
Serpac hac some nice enclosures for just this sort of thing.
Under 10 bucks in single piece price.

Pac Tec makes some very nice enclosures. The "T" series is wide at the top
and narrow at the bottom like your prototype unit. You can reach them at:
Also, I couldn't find a Pac Tec web page but I did find an advertisement in
the Nell Register's Web page including a couple of color pictures (but not
the "T" series box) of their products at this URL: http://www.nell.com/nr00675.htm
You might find other enclosure manufacturers in the Nell Register. Some
companies I've dealt with in the past include Bud and Altech.

Try Pactec enclosures. I think they have what you are looking for. I have
used several in prototypes as well as for final product designs. I have
gotten them from Electronic Precepts in Florida. 1-800-367-4649. They accept
small orders and have a large stock so they are very likely to have what you
are looking for.

Pac-Tec - I think I've got that name right - has a standard plastic case
that might be useful. It's sort of an oversize hand-held calculator case
with a sloping display section, and is designed for just this sort of
switches and display arrangement. I've seen this line at a variety of
local electronics shops, pretty nearly all of them (except Radio SHack, of
course) who carry any cases at all have or can order the Pac-Tec line. My
files are still mostly packed in boxes so that's all the detail I can
provide just now.

Hi Norm.
I have used a very profesional box Made by Bopla in Germany called the BOS
900. It seems to be almost exactly what you have prototyped.
I used a 16x4 display in it which is a very similar size to what you are
using. My project also had a 64 key keypad (Quite a squeeze to layout I was
told).
You can get it with an optional battery back on the back and a stand in
which you could put other control electronics (A CHARGER ETC).
I won't bother to tell you where I got it from as I have no idea what part
of the world you are from.
Cheers
Dennis
