How accurate/what step size does it need to be? I have seen people print one
using a laser printer, and use barcode type led/sensor units with the
printout. If you are just looking to experiment to get experience then this
may do.

Cheap inkjet printers come with scale tape and sensor/encoder. Don't know if
this is the kind of resolution you need...

Resolution? Length?

For simple experimenting and learning how such things work, look into
couple year old inkjet printers. At about 600 dpi they changed from stepper
driven heads to brushed motors and linear encoders for head positioning.

The reader puts out a quadrature signal and I've successfuly read it with a
PIC.

Best of all, can't beat the price.
