Hello all;

Happy Holidays!  I'm new to the list and am trying to learn about
microcontrollers - starting with the PIC.

I am an electronic tech by trade - and am finding that fixing and
designing are VERY different.

I am willing to learn whatever I have to.  Any tips would be great!!

Again - Happy Holidays to all....

Joe

Try UMPS, you will be able to use also other microcontroller with
the same software: PIC, AVR, HC05, HC11, ST6, COP8, ...

Give it a try:  http://www.vmdesign.com

Merry Christmas,

Welcome!  You've PICked a good place to start.  Here's all the stuff
I wish someone had told me at your stage:

Call your local MicroChip representative.  They are very helpful.
You can sometimes talk them into discounts on low end development
tools.

Ask them for the embedded control handbook in HARDCOPY, not in one of
those slow CDroms.

Get into 16C84's first because they are easiest to erase.
>From there all the other PICs are a short step.

Eat, breathe and sleep assembler until you can think in assembler,
and write code as fast as you can type it in.  Then learn C, and
wonder why you spent all that time in assembler.

Your first homework assignment is to build a thing that blinks an
LED.

Buy Myke Predko's books.  (Disclaimer: I do not work for Myke.)

Lie  ahem...  Aspire  your way into a job that requires you to use
PICs after you have a little knowledge of them  (it worked for me!)
<G>  ; )

Despite a few examples to the contrary, we try to be polite and
accomodating to newcomers on the PIClist.
